One of our techniques for treating trauma is through Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). EMDR is an evidence-based treatment for trauma, depression, anxiety, panic disorders, and more.
Trauma includes more than just post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It could be developmental trauma caused by childhood issues, such as emotional neglect, divorce, or a parent’s emotional misattunement.
When people go through trauma, it can leave them struggling with mixed up thoughts about themselves. Thoughts embedded in that traumatic memory might include “I’m incompetent”, “I’m not worthy of love”, “I don’t deserve good things”, “I’m not safe”, “bad things are going to happen”, or “it was my fault”.
But with EMDR, we can get that negative thought to separate from the bad memory so that people can recall the event without having that mixed up thought about themselves attached to it. This usually means you can then open the door to your scary closet and not be afraid of what’s in there.
